The Doepfer Theremin controller is an 8HP module for generating a variable control voltage by approaching/removing hand to/from an antenna. A gate signal can be generated, too if the voltage exceeds a certain threshold set by the according control.

For emulating a Theremin you need two A-178s: one for the pitch and one for the volume.
